Puppy School

Bringing home a new puppy is an exciting time. However, it is also a big change for you and your puppy. To ensure that the transition into their new home goes smoothly, and that they grow up into a well-adjusted member of the family, puppy school is needed.

Why is puppy school important?

Up until 16 weeks of age, puppies are in the critical socialisation development phase in which they absorb the most information and form behaviours that will stay with them for the rest of their lives. It is important to ensure they are introduced to a number of different experiences, socialised with other dogs of different breeds and sizes, and are given boundaries and structure.

What you will learn at puppy school

  • Basic cues - Teach your puppy basic cues like sit, drop, stand, give and leave.

  • Socialisation - Let your puppy play with other puppies in a safe and controlled environment, monitored by our experienced trainers.

  • Good & bad behaviour - Learn how to reward good behaviour and discourage unwanted behaviour like biting, barking and chewing.

  • Lead walking - Teach your puppy how to walk happily on a leash and how to prevent pulling.

  • Diet & nutrition - Learn about the best food for your puppy and what you can and can’t feed them.

  • Parasite prevention - Find out how you can prevent worms, fleas and ticks.

  • Dog health - Learn how to keep your puppy healthy as they grow up and get them used to coming to the vet clinic.

We’re lucky enough to have Elonnah, one of our veterinary nurses and a qualified dog trainer, teach puppy school. We use positive reinforcement techniques like treats and praise to teach your puppy as we believe this is the best way to train your puppy.

  • Our puppy school is suitable for puppies of any breed aged 8 to 16 weeks.

  • Your puppy must have at least had their first vaccination.

  • Classes are from 8pm-9pm on Tuesday nights (and Wednesday nights if there is demand).

  • Classes are held at the Dog and Cats of Manningham Clubhouse in Donvale (behind Aranga dog park).

  • Classes have between 5 to 10 puppies.

  • You’ll receive resources to help you train your puppy at home.

Our puppy school is run through Elonnah’s business Confident Companions and you can visit her website to enquire about her next class.
